In honor of the 100th anniversary of the birth of automotive visionary Carroll Shelby and his legacy on January 11, 2023, Shelby American will begin production of the Mustang Centennial Edition in the second quarter of this year. The cars will be built at Shelby’s US plant in Las Vegas, Nevada and, coincidentally, only 100 will be built – all with a 2023 model year. The production version of the car will debut at the Barrett-Jackson auction in Scottsdale, Arizona. , this week.
“I am very proud of the Carroll Shelby Centennial Mustang, which was designed in honor of my grandfather,” said Aaron Shelby, board member of Carroll Shelby International. “Because Carroll taught me how to drive as a child, I’m sure he will appreciate its power and handling. Shelby style in its purest form. Owning such a car will be a rare and exciting experience.”
Carroll Shelby’s achievement ticked the box off the world of motorsport. He won the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1959 and went on to lead some of the most successful American racing teams of the 1960s, scoring several victories driving a GT40 race car designed by Shelby American for Ford. Of course, his Shelby Cobra is legendary. Meanwhile, enthusiasm for the Shelby Mustang never waned, as evidenced by the many cars that continue to be produced today, including the Shelby GT, Shelby 1000, Super Snake, Shelby Mustang GT500 Code Red, Shelby SE, and Shelby GT500KR. These are the back envelopes that Shelby American filled out when she bought the Mustang from a Ford dealer.
The Centennial Edition is powered by the supercharged 5.0-liter Ford V-8 engine used in the Mustang GT, but upgraded to provide more than 750 horsepower. Handling is “improved” by adjustable roller/camber plates, high-performance springs and anti-roll bars, 20″ x 11″ wheels and Shelby tires, according to Shelby American. Other upgrades include a Borla cat-back exhaust system, a performance radiator and high-performance Brembo brake calipers.
Styling has been upgraded to differentiate the car from other Mustang stablemates, notably Shelby aluminum flared front fenders, Shelby ventilated hood, Shelby-spec rear spoiler, and side sills and fenders. The interior features Shelby leather upgrades and other Shelby parts, making the Centennial Edition a very collectible vehicle.
Enthusiasts can order the 2023 Mustang GT Centennial Edition fastback or convertible in any Ford Mustang color. There is also a choice of manual or automatic transmission. The Centennial Edition package costs $49,995, not including the base car, and includes membership to Team Shelby, a global club founded by Carroll Shelby in 2008, and the Shelby Centennial Book (published by Team Shelby).
The cars will also be eligible for registration on the official Shelby registry, and each sale will include a donation to the Carroll Shelby Foundation, which works to help children with serious medical needs. In addition, each vehicle delivered will be accompanied by a black Shelby Edition Stetson hat (Carroll Shelby is rarely seen without a hat).
